The Steve Hodgson Memorial Tournament is the biggest HEMA competition in NZ. We are expecting more than 45 competitors from all around NZ this year.
This tournament is geared to put fun, participation, and demonstration of skills ahead of winning at all costs. Novice players are encouraged to enter to improve their skills fighting under pressure and to encounter fighting styles from multiple clubs. Experienced players are encouraged to demonstrate their skills and technique while resisting the urge to ‘play it safe’.
The person who does the best overall will be awarded the Steve Hodgson Trophy.
Included in your $30 entry fee is lunch and refreshments.
The tournament schedule is outlined below. Please note that you need to be ready for your section 30 mins before it starts. We will start sections early if we are able so that we can don’t run over time.
- 8:30AM – Registration Opens
- 9:00AM – Tournament Briefing
- 9:15AM – Beginners
- 10:00AM – Synthetic Sidesword
- 11:00AM – Steel Sidesword
- Midday – The Provocation (see below)
- 12:30PM – Lunch
- 1:15PM – Rapier
- 2:15PM – Synthetic Longsword
- 3:15PM – Steel Longsword
- 4:45PM – Mixed Weapons
- 5:30PM – Prize Giving
After the tournament there is likely to be a impromptu dinner out with your fellow HEMA enthusiasts.
The Provocation is an inter-club mini-tournament held within the main tournament. Each club attending the main tournament can put forward one champion for each of three different sections (steel sidesword, steel longsword, and steel rapier). The same person can enter all three sections or 3 different people –it is up to the club involved. Which club will come out on top?
Sunday Open Day
On Sunday the 18th, Auckland Sword and Shield will be holding an open day. Come down and see how we run a training session, or perhaps spar with anyone who’s keen.
